Canada announces new immigration pilots to support rural and Francophone minority communities, will create a permanent program
The Rural Community Immigration Pilot will launch in the fall of 2024. It aims to ensure that rural communities continue to have the ability to access programs that address labour shortages and help local businesses find the workers they need. It will provide pathways to permanent residence for newcomers who can help to overcome critical labour job shortages and want to live long term in these smaller communities.

Students who are confirmed as refugees are eligible to receive additional funding under the refugee student grant, which is allocated to school jurisdictions to provide additional language, social and educational supports. The funding is in addition to the base funding allocation. Children and students will be included in the grant calculation for up to five consecutive years.
Ottawa says it will bypass Quebec's immigration cap to speed up family reunification
After several months of asking the Quebec government in vain to increase its family reunification capacity, Federal Immigration Minister Marc Miller says it's time for his government to pull rank.
Miller says his ministry will begin issuing permanent residence permits to those looking to unite with their loved ones in Quebec, regardless of the province's self-imposed cap on applicants, which he describes as "artificially low."
